Hey, And Look Here, That’s A Fact Jack

Take a little look at my DVR.  Besides the 17 Disney/Pixar movies and 11 episodes of Yo Gabba Gabba stored for a rainy day when I’m about to lose my mind… there is one thing in common.  Reality TV.  I can’t think of many things we watch that don’t fit into that category.  Our latest obsession- Duck Dynasty.  The whole bearded family is just hilarious, and Uncle Si… Well, he steals my heart and nearly makes me pee my pants every week.

I truly really feel like those Robertsons are up there in Monroe hanging out at the duck call factory waiting for us to be friends.

While the validity of many “reality” shows could probably be debated, I remember watching Survivor as a kid, sneaking to watch The Bachelor in high school, and REALLY rebelling and watching Real World when I moved out in college.  So what is it about reality tv that draws us in?  Real people.  Real life.  There are no guaranteed happy endings.  The best player in the alliance has to leave because of an injury, the bachelor you’ve swooned over for weeks picks the crazy girl, and that one bizarre roommate finally wears out their welcome and has to pack their bags and go.

It’s a lot like life where things don’t always work out like we planned.  We spend the majority of our life pretending we are in a sitcom or a drama, but this is reality y’all.  It’s okay that things aren’t always perfect.  It’s okay that we don’t always get it right.  But we can learn a little something from those Robertsons.  At the end of the day, what’s most important are the people that surround us at the dinner table holding our hand in prayer.  They might drive us completely crazy during the day.  Our kids might be a little looney, our spouse might have done something sort of foolish, we might even have that crazy Uncle Si… but we’ll get through it– together.

When life gets crazy, we’ve got each other which is enough to make me happy, happy, happy.  And that’s a fact, Jack…
