Undivided Attention

Undivided Attention

A moment of honesty. Now, I can tell you I’m not proud of this. But I trust you enough to hope you will not judge me too badly for it. Here it is… I am one of those women. You know the kind. I hope that I have a few more kids (few = two-ish, maybe three if I am feeling brave). And yet, often, when I hear someone is pregnant for their third child (or anything exceeding three), I have that reaction… “Again??” (But if it makes you feel better, that is often followed with a, “Good for her! What a precious family they are!”) What is wrong with me? I am a walking paradox.

But here’s the deal. I have two kids. Two precious boys who are the sunshine of my soul and make me feel like the luckiest girl on the face of this whole big earth. But there are also days when I feel like I am drowning in the deepest ocean, and I will surely perish. And I have two. Bless you, sweet mommas of many. I aim to be like you one day. However, even in my limited experience, I feel I have learned something about children.

No matter how amazing of a parent you are, the more children you have, the more your attention will be divided. Now, because you are a fabulous momma, your skills will likely also improve at managing that division… but it will always be divided.

Let me give you an example.

Dominic comes in crying. He has fallen and scraped his knee. At the same time, Vaughn comes in crying. He’s tired and thirsty. I love both of my children equally, and were these situations happening at different times, each would get the same treatment. But they are coming at the same time, so we must triage. “Vaughn, buddy, you are going to have to wait one sec. I’m going to clean up Dominic’s knee and then I will get you something to drink, okay?”

Want to know something incredible? God is not like that.

As we become parents, I feel it becomes easier to relate to the nature of God– the unconditional love, the desire to provide and care for our babies. But God’s ability to have undivided attention for each of His children is something we do not understand. God has the ability to be omniscient, and that is something that as humans that we just cannot quite wrap our heads around.

Do you know what omniscient means? It means that no matter your need, God has the ability to care for you, at any moment, like you are the only child He has.

Is your mother dying of cancer? Is your child causing you heartache? Are you drowning in debt? Are you just tired and thirsty? No matter the magnitude of your need– today, tomorrow, always– You have God’s undivided attention.  Bring your need to Him. Let Him take care of it for you…
