Press On

In the first two weeks of June, the two oldest turkeys took swimming lessons. Toward the end of the session we were briefed on their progress and the teacher, who is also a dear friend of mine, cautioned us that we should really watch our oldest. A common mistake in kids is that they tend to venture out, and while they are capable of reaching their intended goal, when it gets close, they stop swimming. They panic and forget to kick or push the water, even though the wall is right there within reach.

And isn’t that how life is? We set out for our target fully intent on reaching the mark. We are eager and kick and push to get us where we need to be. But when we feel we have done enough to reach the end, and we still aren’t quite there yet, we panic. We stop swimming. And we lose sight of where we were headed and focus only on the feeling that we are drowning, failing.

But any goal worth reaching takes effort, determination, and a continued perseverance that is unparalleled.

Today, you are closer than you think. Don’t lose sight of the goal. Don’t stop swimming when you are oh so close. Press on. Push forward. Don’t panic. You are almost there…
